A hard-fought victory, three crucial points

November 1, 2026

FC Lugano beat FC Basel 2–1 in front of 8,153 spectators at the AIL Arena, which recorded its first ever sell-out. On matchday 12 of the Brack Super League, the bianconeri secured three invaluable points at the end of a match of two halves: brilliant and clinical in the first half-hour, Mattia Croci-Torti’s side were then forced to endure a long spell of pressure, yet still managed to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.

The match was decided by goals from Daniel Dos Santos and Yanis Cimignani, both in the first half, before Philip Otele’s goal brought the game back into the balance. This victory takes on even greater significance in light of Young Boys’ home defeat to Zurich: the Bianconeri’s lead over second place thus rises to nine points.

FLYING START AND DOUBLE LEAD
FC Lugano got off to a determined start. It took just two minutes to create their first big chance: Papadopoulos drove forward with the ball at his feet and played it to Dos Santos, who cleverly spotted Behrens making a run into the box. The German found himself one-on-one with Omlin, but the Rossoblù goalkeeper parried the shot away with his foot.

The opening goal came in the 10th minute, following a splendid move. Bislimi played a delicate outside-of-the-foot pass into the space behind the defence for Dos Santos, who cut into the box and beat Omlin at the near post, putting the bianconeri ahead.

Croci-Torti’s side maintained control of the game, despite having to cope with Moncada’s injury, which forced him off in the 21st minute to make way for Beckham Castro. Basel tried to respond in the 26th minute with a left-footed shot from distance by Cissé, which von Ballmoos saved with ease.

A minute later, however, the bianconeri doubled their lead. Papadopoulos played a long ball to Cimignani, who controlled it as he ran forward and fired a shot from the edge of the box, beating Omlin to make it 2–0.

After the first half-hour of clear Lugano dominance, the visitors gradually began to gain ground. In the 36th minute, Metinho seriously tested von Ballmoos with a powerful long-range shot, which the bianconeri goalkeeper managed to tip away for a corner. It was from the resulting corner that the goal came to bring the match back into the game: Michelin nodded the ball on and Otele, again with a header, made it 2–1 in the 37th minute.

The goal restored Basel’s confidence, and they finished the first half on a high note after a period initially dominated by the home side.

A TOUGH SECOND HALF
The second half took a different turn. Play became more disjointed and Basel took the initiative, pressing hard for an equaliser. FC Lugano dropped deeper, packed the defensive half and tried to exploit the spaces left by their opponents to launch counter-attacks.

The second half became even more complicated in the 51st minute, when Delcroix was also forced to leave the pitch through injury. Bichsel came on in his place: this was the second enforced substitution for Croci-Torti, who had already been forced to do without Moncada in the first half.

Chances on goal were few and far between in the early stages of the second half, but the match came to life again in the final twenty minutes, as fatigue set in for both sides, causing the gaps between the lines to widen.

In the 71st minute, FC Lugano created a dangerous chance: Cimignani delivered a low, driven cross from the left, which Beckham Castro met with a first-time left-footed shot. The shot was on target and Omlin saved it. Two minutes later, it was Basel who came close to equalising. On the counter-attack, Otele received the ball on the edge of the box and aimed for the top corner with a curling shot that went wide by just a few centimetres.

The bianconeri were going through a difficult spell, but in the 82nd minute they threatened Omlin’s goal once more. Karimov made a run into the box and fired a powerful shot at the near post, only for the Rossoblù goalkeeper to parry it away. The visitors’ response was not long in coming: in the 84th minute, Sow broke free down the right with a solo run and curled his shot across goal, sending the ball just wide.

The closing stages remained open and fiercely contested. In the 91st minute, FC Lugano created one last big chance through Bislimi, who picked out Ajeti in the box: the striker’s shot, however, was brilliantly saved by Omlin, who did well to deny the home side a third goal.

THREE POINTS TO STRENGTHEN THEIR LEAD
The final whistle confirmed FC Lugano’s 2–1 victory, at the end of one of the most hard-fought matches of the season so far. After a first half characterised by an excellent start and two goals, the bianconeri were mainly forced to defend, showing determination and the ability to withstand the opposition’s pressure.

These are three points of considerable significance, allowing Croci-Torti’s side to consolidate their lead at the top of the table and extend their advantage over second place to nine points. All this on a historic day for the AIL Arena, which celebrated its first ever sell-out crowd.

Now the focus shifts back to Europe: on Thursday 5 November, the bianconeri return to action, once again in front of their home crowd, to face Kauno Žalgiris in the League Phase of the UEFA Conference League.
