VINCENZO BRENNA, LEGEND OF 441 APPEARANCES

May 2, 2026

Cornaredo Stadium is about to go down in history. What better occasion to welcome those who truly wrote that history, joining the select ranks of bianconeri legends.

On the occasion of the match against BSC Young Boys on Sunday 3 May 2026, our club will pay tribute to a figure who has left a profound mark on the history of FC Lugano: Vincenzo Brenna, the true heart and soul of the bianconeri, an emblem of dedication, professionalism and loyalty to our colours, which have earned him a special place in the memories and hearts of the fans.

A bianconeri legend, one of the architects of the 1968 Swiss Cup victory and a player for the Swiss national team, Brenna will be officially honoured as the record holder for appearances in an FC Lugano shirt, with an impressive 441 – an extraordinary achievement that bears witness to years of commitment, passion and loyalty to our colours.

Thanks to a process of verification and careful reconstruction of seasons for which it is not easy to shed light, carried out by a statistics expert fascinated by Mattia Bottani’s career, it has emerged that the all-time record for appearances in FC Lugano’s history belongs to Vincenzo Brenna. Not, therefore, to Jonathan Sabbatini, who was awarded the record of 413 appearances on 6 December 2023 as a result of an incomplete assessment based on incomplete data, for which the club does not hesitate to take full responsibility (the then League Cup, organised between 1972 and 1982, a competition officially recognised by today’s Swiss Football League, was not taken into account).

With the grace that has always distinguished him, Jonathan Sabbatini, who finished his career in the bianconeri shirt with 437 appearances, was duly contacted and informed of this new historical reconstruction. Although understandably somewhat taken aback, Sabbatini expressed his delight at the recognition awarded to Brenna with great sportsmanship.

Tomorrow, therefore, on the occasion of one of the final matches at the Cornaredo stadium, we shall take a moment to celebrate our history, paying fitting tribute to a player who has left an indelible mark on the history of the Club and the stadium we are about to bid farewell to.

FC Lugano is proud to honour Vincenzo Brenna before kick-off and to share this special moment with the entire crowd. We invite all fans to be present at Cornaredo to make this tribute to a bianconeri legend even more meaningful.
