The Wankdorf Stadium provides the setting for this 31st-round Brack Super League clash, in which the Bianconeri face a direct rival for a European spot. On a pitch that is traditionally a tough place to play, Mattia Croci-Torti’s side take on Young Boys with the aim of building on their recent form and picking up vital points.
However, FC Lugano get off to a difficult start: in the 5th minute, Virginius breaks down the left flank and plays the ball back to Alvyn Sanches, who beats von Ballmoos with his left foot to put the home side ahead at the first opportunity of the match. The Bianconeri’s response is immediate, with high pressing: in the 7th minute, Belhadj wins the ball back in the opposition’s box and sets up Bislimi for a shot, but the effort goes just over the bar.
As the minutes ticked by, Lugano took control of possession and tried to build up play, whilst Young Boys looked dangerous mainly on the counter-attack. In the 20th minute, von Ballmoos produced a superb save to deny Bedia’s header, whilst in the 25th minute, Delcroix came close to equalising with a header from Steffen’s free-kick that went just wide. In the closing stages of the first half, the home side pushed forward again with an unstoppable Virginius, but once again von Ballmoos was alert. The teams went into the break 1-0, at the end of a balanced first half in which Lugano had the greater share of possession without, however, finding the decisive breakthrough.
THE BIANCONERI’S RESPONSE
: After the restart, the pattern remained the same, with Virginius once again causing problems with his bursts of pace; in the 50th minute, von Ballmoos was again on hand to deny him a goal with a superb save. Lugano responded with quality: in the 53rd minute, a one-two between Bislimi and Cimignani set up the midfielder for a shot from the edge of the box, which grazed the post, whilst shortly afterwards Belhadj failed to find the net with his left foot when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
However, the Bianconeri’s pressure is finally rewarded in the 63rd minute: from a corner, in a scramble in the box, Bedia fouls Bislimi and the referee points to the spot. From the penalty spot, Grgić proves himself flawless, coolly slotting home the equaliser. The goal gave Lugano confidence, and they continued to push forward: Mahou tested Keller in the 71st minute, whilst a few minutes later there were two close-range chances for Koutsias and Bislimi, but both shots were blocked.
In the closing stages, Young Boys tried to respond, spurred on by the home crowd, but found von Ballmoos in decisive form, making a double save in the 80th minute to deny Sanches and Essende. The hosts launched an assault in the final minutes, but were unable to find the winning goal.
An intense and hard-fought match thus ended 1-1, with FC Lugano managing to bounce back from an early deficit to secure a deserved point. Attention now turns to the international break, which will give the Bianconeri time to recharge their batteries and prepare thoroughly for their next home fixture on 4 April against league leaders FC Thun.
