Having gone without a league win since 23 August (and since the following week, if we include their progress to the second round of the AXA Women’s Cup), FC Lugano Femminile have once again savoured the sweet taste of victory, securing an away win at Wädenswil thanks to two goals scored in the second half.
Ever since the team was taken in charge by Andrea Antonelli – that is, from Thursday onwards – the players have given their all, preparing for the match with their usual seriousness and positive attitude, and maintaining that approach right up to kick-off. From a technical and tactical perspective, but above all in terms of their attitude and approach against a very physical opponent boasting some strong individual players, the bianconeri never lost their composure, remained organised and capitalised on the two chances they created – first through captain Eleonora Castellani early in the second half and then through the young attacking winger Aline Oliva in the closing stages of the match. All the players put in an excellent performance, which was by no means a foregone conclusion following the recent run of poor form, culminating in last week’s 6–2 defeat in Winterthur.
‘It was a very well-played and hard-fought match in every respect. The girls’ strength lay in their composure in handling various situations when fatigue began to set in. What they managed to ‘dig deep’ for was very important, both when in possession and when out of possession. Technically speaking, we approached the match in a positive manner. What’s more, bearing in mind that the weather was truly appalling: it was pouring with rain and there was a furious wind. Let’s savour this victory and, from tomorrow, start focusing on the Cup tie in Biel. The aim is clearly to progress to the next round. And if we approach the next challenge – and, more generally, those that lie ahead in the short to medium term – with this attitude, we can hold our own against any opponent,’ said manager Andrea Antonelli in his post-match analysis.
