The match between FC Lugano and FC St. Gallen was suspended in the 48th minute and postponed until a later date due to bad weather.
The Swiss Football League will announce the date and kick-off time for the rescheduled match in the coming hours; in accordance with the regulations, the match will be replayed in full, starting from a 0-0 scoreline.
Up until the interruption, the match at Cornaredo had been evenly balanced and intense, with both teams careful not to give away space and determined to impose their own rhythm. After a tentative opening phase, the first chance came in the 17th minute, when Cimignani went it alone and tried his luck from outside the box: first his left-footed effort was blocked, then his right-footed shot flew high over the bar. In the 21st minute, St. Gallen responded with a curling right-footed shot from Vogt from the edge of the box, which failed to hit the target.
Lugano broke the deadlock in the 24th minute: Bislimi played a through ball to Cimignani, who read the space well and crossed for Behrens, who slotted home from close range to make it 1-0.
The match remained closely contested and intense, with plenty of battles in midfield and few clear-cut chances. The Bianconeri had managed the opposition’s pressure well in the closing stages of the first half, though they failed to capitalise on a few good counter-attacks. In the 45th minute, Gaal had won the ball back in the attacking third and struck with his right foot from the edge of the box, with the ball going just wide.
At the start of the second half, Croci-Torti’s side came out with the same spirit and, in the 47th minute, Dos Santos came close to doubling the lead with a left-footed shot from outside the box that went just wide. Immediately afterwards, however, heavy rain forced referee Mirel Turkes to suspend the match.
The match was therefore abandoned due to the pitch being unplayable. Official updates regarding the date and time of the rescheduled match will follow.
