Just five days after their away match in St. Gallen, FC Lugano are ready to take to the pitch once again to face BSC Young Boys on Sunday in Bern, in a match where crucial points are at stake in the race for European qualification. The 1-1 comeback draw secured on Tuesday evening at the kybunpark, achieved despite being a man down, provided a significant insight into the team’s character, as Mattia Croci-Torti also highlighted: ‘…the team refused to give up… we’re showing character… Now we’re heading to Bern full of determination’. A strong signal ahead of a tight and demanding match, which the Bianconeri will face without Daniel Dos Santos, however, who is suspended following his sending-off in St. Gallen. In the table, Lugano sit third, five points clear of the Bernese side, with the clear aim of defending a position that would guarantee entry into European competitions. Behind them, however, Basel are hot on their heels, just one point adrift, making every match decisive in this final stretch of the regular season.
On the other hand, Young Boys go into the match buoyed by their 2-0 away win in Lausanne and with a real chance of reigniting the race for third place. Gerardo Seoane’s side have alternated between convincing performances and spells of inconsistency throughout the season, as evidenced by their three wins and two defeats in their last five matches – a run of form that leaves Sunday’s fixture open to various outcomes. Previous encounters this season also reflect this balance: whilst the Yellow-Blacks won 3-1 in Bern in August, the Bianconeri responded decisively with a 3-0 victory at Cornaredo in December.
In such an uncertain and competitive context, the away trip to the capital therefore represents a crucial test for Lugano, who must regain consistency and decisively reignite their European ambitions.
