On 28 November 2021, the citizens of Lugano expressed their strong desire for the construction of the new Sports and Events Centre by voting with an approval rate of 56%. The new sports district will see the construction of a new stadium named AIL Arena. The facility will be dedicated exclusively to football and managed solely by FC Lugano.
