CORNAREDO STADIUM

OVERVIEW

Cornaredo Municipal Stadium is the sporting heart of the City. It was inaugurated in 1951 with a match between FC Lugano and FC Chiasso, which the Bianconeri won 7-0. The Swiss national team played at Cornaredo for the first time on November 25, 1951. The match was a friendly against Italy that ended in a 1-1 draw played in front of 32,500 fans. In the late 1990s, after FC Lugano enjoyed a string of impressive performances, including competing in European competitions multiple seasons in a row, and with a national initiative to construct modern stadiums ahead of Euro 2008, city officials and the club’s management started talks on potentially expanding, renovating, or even completely rebuilding the Cornaredo Municipal Stadium. In 2008, the Lugano City Council once again expressed its intent to upgrade and modernize the stadium. Then, in 2015, following FC Lugano’s promotion to the Swiss Super League, the City Council and the club implemented essential upgrades to meet the Swiss Football League’s safety standards. This resulted in the stadium’s capacity being reduced from 10,500 to approximately 6,000 seats.
