Following their goal-fest against Gäu Selection in the first round of the Swiss Cup (the draw for the round of 32 has set up an intriguing home tie against Basel, a top-flight side, which will take place on the weekend of 26–27 September), FC Lugano Women return from their away trip to Ostermundigen empty-handed, following a 1–0 (0–0) defeat in the Canton of Bern.
The match on the third matchday of the National League B turned out to be very similar to the opening fixture in Küssnacht. Indeed, it was decided by a controversial incident. It was a shame, as the classic, well-organised match between the two sides had been heading for a goalless draw. Then, in the first third of the second half, the only goal of the day arrived, scored by Andrea Gretz, condemning the Ticino side to their second narrow defeat away from home. In the final half-hour of play, Antonella Albertini and her team-mates continued to put pressure on their opponents and had several shots on goal. What was missing, however, was that touch of competitive edge that denied them at least a point.
As a result of this setback, FC Lugano Femminile remain on 1 point after 270 minutes of play. The next fixture for coach Andrea Antonelli’s side is scheduled for Saturday 5 September 2026. Kicking off at 6.00 pm, they will be away to Sion – alongside Thun and Schlieren, one of the teams with a perfect record after three league matches – at the Ancien Stand.
Before then, however, the manager of the Lugano women’s side takes a moment to analyse what happened on Sunday afternoon on the outskirts of the Swiss capital: ‘It’s a shame, because it was a closely contested match. In fact, to be honest, we could have opened the scoring, but in the sixth minute we hit the crossbar with an open goal. Just like in Küssnacht, however, a somewhat rash decision cost us dearly. After that, we did everything we could to try and equalise, but we didn’t manage it. I can’t fault the girls in any way. They put their heart and soul into it right up until the very last playable ball.”
