FC Lugano have rounded off the first block of the season in the best possible way. On Matchday 9 of the Brack Super League, the bianconeri secured a 4-0 away win against FC Lausanne-Sport, notching up their eighth victory in the first nine league matches.
At La Tuilière, Mattia Croci-Torti’s side broke the deadlock in what was initially a closely contested match through Delcroix in the first half. The Belgian defender then completed his hat-trick in the opening minutes of the second half, before an own goal by Sow sealed the 4-0 victory.
DELCROIX BREAKS THE DEADLOCK
Lugano immediately tried to take the initiative and, in the 3rd minute, created their first chance through Anto Grgić, whose left-footed shot from outside the box went just wide. Lausanne’s response came two minutes later from a set-piece: Koindredi played a short pass to Soppy, who crossed into the box for Sow, but von Ballmoos saved the defender’s shot.
The match continued at a relatively slow pace with few clear-cut chances. In the 25th minute, Mendes found space on the right, beat his man and cut into the box, but his diagonal shot was saved by von Ballmoos.
Four minutes later, it was Lugano’s turn to come close to taking the lead. Cimignani sent in a low cross into the centre and Moncada arrived with a sliding challenge in the six-yard box, but failed to find the target.
In the 34th minute, Grgić came even closer to scoring with a free-kick from the edge of the box aimed just under the crossbar: Mastil dived and tipped it away for a corner. It was from the resulting corner that the 1–0 came. Beckham Castro crossed to the far post; Papadopoulos won the loose ball and laid it back into the centre, where Delcroix arrived from close range and slotted home with his left foot.
BLACK-AND-WHITE HAT-TRICK AND FOUR-GOAL HAUL
The second half began with Lugano quickly taking control of the match. In the 48th minute, Grgić took a short corner to Beckham Castro, who crossed to the far post: Delcroix beat the defence to the ball and headed home to make it 2–0.
Two minutes later, Lausanne-Sport were also reduced to ten men. Koné made a hard challenge on Grgić and Urs Schnyder showed him a red card.
Lugano capitalised on the situation straight away and scored their third goal in the 52nd minute. From another set-piece, Grgić plays the ball out wide to Karimov: the winger beats his direct opponent and delivers a low, driven cross to the far post, where Delcroix once again times his run perfectly and heads home to complete his hat-trick.
The bianconeri’s pressure continued and in the 61st minute the score became 4–0. Zanotti, who had come on a few minutes earlier and was playing on the left flank, beat an opponent and delivered a low cross into the centre. Sow tried to beat Ajeti to the ball but deflected it into his own net.
In the final half-hour, FC Lugano controlled their lead, conceded little to the home side and saw the match through to the final whistle.
With this victory at La Tuilière, the bianconeri have now recorded eight wins and one draw in their first nine matches, consolidating their lead at the top of the table. Sion’s simultaneous draw means they now hold a six-point lead over both Sion and Young Boys.
The league now takes a long break for international fixtures. FC Lugano return to action on 10 October at the AIL Arena against FC Luzern.
