The Letzigrund Stadium is hosting the clash between FC Zürich and FC Lugano on Matchday 33 of the Brack Super League, the final fixture of the regular season before the start of the Championship Group. In a match crucial for maintaining momentum and setting themselves up in the best possible way for the decisive phase of the championship, Mattia Croci-Torti’s side face a compact and dangerous opponent, against whom patience, quality in build-up play and composure in the final third will be required.
The first chance of the match came as early as the 4th minute and was created by the bianconeri: Steffen crossed from the right, Koutsias let it run through and Cimignani tried a sliding deflection, but Huber made a fine save, coming off his line low. The bianconeri maintain possession from the outset, building up play and attempting to stretch the opposition defence, though they struggle to consistently find the right opening in the final third. Zurich, for their part, line up very compactly and manage to block the most dangerous passing lanes with discipline.
The home side make their presence felt mainly from set pieces. In the 19th minute, Tsawa takes a dangerous corner and Keny heads the ball just centimetres wide of the post. The pattern of the match, however, remains unchanged: it is Lugano who dictate the play and control the territory, without managing to break through, whilst the home side sit back and look to hit them on the counter-attack. In the 38th minute, another chance fell to the Biancoblù, again from a header, this time from Cavaleiro following a cross from Walker, but the effort was weak and Saipi saved it comfortably.
A TIGHT MATCH, STEFFEN BREAKS THE DEADLOCK The deadlock
remained unbroken in the second half. Lugano continued to build up good moves and dominate the opposition’s half, but struggled to turn their dominance into clear-cut chances. Zurich, meanwhile, stuck to their game plan and kept looking for openings on the counter-attack and from set-pieces.
In the 58th minute, Grgić tried his luck from a long way out, but his effort went over the bar. Three minutes later, in the 61st minute, it was Zurich who looked dangerous once again from a set-piece: Keny received the ball at the far post and cut it back for Kamberi’s right-footed volley, but from a good position he failed to hit the target.
The key moment of the match came in the 62nd minute, when Lugano took the lead with a swift move, started directly by the goalkeeper. Saipi launched a long ball, Koutsias nodded it on for Steffen, who read the play perfectly, found himself one-on-one with Huber and beat him with composure. After over an hour in which the bianconeri created plenty without finding the decisive breakthrough, a two-pass vertical move was enough to break the deadlock.
With the deadlock broken, Croci-Torti’s side continued to attack in search of a second goal. In the 73rd minute, Dos Santos played an inviting ball across for Koutsias, whose right-footed shot was deflected and flew just wide of the post. Zurich remained in the game, but the Bianconeri gave the impression they could strike again, especially when they managed to raise the tempo and quality in the final third.
The best chance to seal the win came in the 85th minute: Grgić delivered a precise cross and Delcroix, diving in the six-yard box, met it with a header, only to be denied by a superb save from Huber. In stoppage time, there was also room for one last chance, with Alioski playing Behrens into the box, but the German striker fired just wide.
The final whistle thus handed Lugano a crucial victory, their third consecutive 1-0 win against the Zurich side, with which the bianconeri ended the Regular Season on a high. The league now takes a weekend’s break, due to the Swiss Cup semi-finals, before the start of the Championship Group: the next fixture is scheduled for the weekend of 25 April, away at the Stockhorn Arena in Thun.
