Just a few days after their victory over Servette FC, FC Lugano are back in action straight away for another key fixture in the Brack Super League. On Sunday, the bianconeri face FC Basel 1893 in a clash between the top and third-placed teams in the table: Lugano lead with 15 points, whilst the Basel side sit third on 10 points.
Mattia Croci-Torti’s side go into the match on the back of five wins from their first five league games, having made a perfect start to the season with a full points tally.
FROM SERVETTE TO BASEL
Their latest victory came on Thursday evening at the AIL Arena against Servette. It was a closely contested match right until the very end, decided in the 94th minute by a goal from Albian Ajeti, who came on at half-time and scored straight away on his debut for the bianconeri.
For the new number 9, this is a particularly significant debut, especially ahead of Sunday’s fixture: having arrived in Lugano just a few days ago, Ajeti immediately faces Basel, his former club.
The victory over the Geneva side has allowed FC Lugano to return to the top of the table and has once again confirmed the importance of having options available during a period characterised by a busy schedule.
BASEL THIRD
Basel, too, go into the match following Thursday’s midweek fixture. The Rhine side, however, come into the game on the back of a different result: against Sion, they were pegged back and defeated after taking the lead, leaving them on 10 points.
Third place in the table nevertheless keeps Basel among the league’s top sides and makes Sunday’s clash one of the day’s key fixtures. For Lugano, this is also their second away fixture in the space of a week, following last Sunday’s victory away at Sion.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT TEST
The fixture list therefore presents the bianconeri with another head-to-head clash just a few days after their match against Servette. In Basel, FC Lugano will be looking to build on their league form, aware that they face a quality side in what is a particularly significant fixture at the top of the table.
After five consecutive wins, Croci-Torti’s side head to St. Jakob-Park aiming to build on their form and defend their top spot in the Brack Super League.
MEDICAL UPDATE
Ahead of the trip to Basel, Mattia Zanotti will be rested as a precaution after experiencing muscle fatigue.
Martim Marques and Kevin Behrens, meanwhile, continue to make positive progress in their respective recovery programmes.
