A superb performance from the bianconeri girls

September 6, 2026

There could be no better way to secure the first win of the season. A triumph that feels like a real feat for FC Lugano Women, who managed to win away at none other than Sion – a newly relegated side that had remained unbeaten in their first three matches of the season – with a 1–4 (0–1) scoreline.

The match played by the Bianconeri was truly incredible from every angle. It all began with the weekly preparations for this tough away fixture, which were executed exceptionally well – tactically, technically and in terms of concentration. It was a well-fought contest on a pitch where, objectively speaking, few other teams will come away with so many points. The red-and-whites are a very strong side, which makes the performance put in by the Lugano team all the more impressive. The goals that secured the precious three points for the visitors were scored by Mathilda Andreoli, Marta Iannaccone (a brace) and Aline Oliva. Elisabeth Diakité was the only one to find the net for the home side.

This first win of the season sees Mia von Ballmoos and her team-mates climb to 7th place on 4 points and head into the cantonal derby against Gambarogno on Wednesday 9 September 2026 at the main pitch of the Al Maglio Sports Centre in Canobbio with renewed vigour and confidence. The kick-off for the midweek fixture is scheduled for 7.45 pm.

A clearly delighted manager Andrea Antonelli commented as follows on the ninety minutes played by his players in the Canton of Valais: “We were coming off the back of three matches where we’d picked up few points due to various circumstances. Coming to play here in Sion was far from straightforward for mental reasons, given the phase we were going through and, not least, the strength of the opposition. The performance was superb from everyone. No one held back, fighting for every available ball. The match against Gambarogno? It’s a victory that boosts our morale and, more generally, helps us manage the rest of the week. We’re resting this Sunday, then tomorrow and Tuesday we’ll prepare as best we can for Wednesday evening’s derby.”
