The draw for the AXA Women’s Cup round of 16 has pitted FC Lugano against a highly prestigious opponent: the Bianconere will face FC Zürich on Saturday 8 November at 7.15 pm at the Cornaredo Sports Centre.
The fixture comes at a time of renewed confidence for the team, which, after a difficult start to the league season – with five defeats, one draw and just one win – has managed to bounce back thanks to two consecutive victories. This is a significant turnaround that demonstrates the team’s growth and the positive impact made by new manager Andrea Antonelli.
The Bianconere’s run in the Swiss Cup has also been impressive. After knocking out Lucerne, Lugano beat FC Biel-Bienne on penalties, earning their place in the round of 16 through sheer determination. The clash against Zurich will thus serve as a challenging test to gauge the team’s progress against an established side from the top tier of Swiss football.
Meanwhile, the league campaign continues with two matches in quick succession: the away fixture against FC Yverdon and the subsequent home match against FC Schlieren. These two fixtures will offer Lugano the chance to build on their current run of form and arrive at the Cup tie in the best possible shape.
